Notably, prognostic frames — explicit calls to action, the exact content moderators are most apt to flag — show no predictive power. Softening, Memes, and the Aesthetic Front

Where Bailard2024-pj examines a relatively closed extremist channel, Nangle2026-yo and Bouchafra2026-ts turn to mainstream-facing platforms where the work is normalization rather than mobilization of an existing cadre. Nangle2026-yo theorizes far-right Instagram as an “affective-discursive ecology” in which positive affect, humour, and memetic forms — not overt hostility — do the ideological work, with algorithmic proximity stitching extremist-adjacent content into ordinary feeds. Bouchafra2026-ts empirically corroborates this aesthetic pivot for an institutional actor: the Sweden Democrats devoted the bulk of their 2024 EU campaign output to TikTok memes (67.5% of all posts were memes; 87% of TikTok posts), targeting young voters with affectively charged, sometimes geographically fabricated, securitising visuals. Together they suggest that “softening” is not incidental decoration but the central mechanism by which far-right discourse migrates from the fringes into everyday vernacular — vindicating Rothut2026-wt’s observation that mainstreaming has become a defining macro-level concern.

Platform Architectures and Adversarial Creativity

Karo2026-dn and Bouchafra2026-ts converge from opposite ideological poles on a shared structural insight: extremists of all stripes treat platform architecture as a design problem. Karo2026-dn’s typology of jihadist evasion tactics on TikTok — audio camouflage, meme infiltration, blurred intent, emoji codes, bait-and-switch — describes adversarial creativity exploiting the very vernacular features Nangle2026-yo identifies as normalising tools. Crucially, Karo2026-dn notes these tactics are not ideology-specific, recurring across far-right and anti-vaccine communities, which reframes the problem as infrastructural rather than ideological. Bouchafra2026-ts adds the strategic-communicative complement: the same actor uses different rhetorical registers across Facebook, X, and TikTok, distributing remix templates to supporters in a way that decentralises production while preserving plausible deniability. Both papers thus push against the post-by-post moderation logic that Bailard2024-pj also rejects on temporal grounds.

Open Questions and the Shape of the Field

Read together, these papers describe a research front that has largely accepted the hybrid socio-technical premise Rothut2026-wt formalizes, and is now mapping its consequences: that mobilization is cyclical and emotion-driven Bailard2024-pj; that normalization is aesthetic and algorithmic Nangle2026-yo; that evasion is creative and cross-ideological Karo2026-dn; and that strategic communication is platform-vernacular-specific Bouchafra2026-ts. The gaps Rothut2026-wt highlights — longitudinal causal evidence, attention to under-studied platforms (gaming, alt-tech), and integration across micro/meso/macro levels — remain visible here too. In particular, none of the empirical studies links exposure to individual-level attitude or behavioural change; they capture the ecology and the supply side, but the recipient-level mechanisms Rothut2026-wt flags as decisive are still mostly inferred. The next move for the topic appears to be bridging these ecological accounts with the micro-level pathway evidence that ethical and access constraints continue to make scarce.
